Firefighters rescue dog from tree

In a twist to the usual story, two Beaufort firefighters helped rescue a pet stuck up in a tree early Monday morning. But this time it wasn't a cat that was out on a limb at Beaufort National Cemetery. "They got there, and this was a little dachshund. In a tree. Just sitting up there on a branch," Beaufort/Port Royal Fire Department spokesman John Robinson said. "So Ross Vezin got a ladder and leaned it up the tree, and the dog started licking him in the face and came on down . . . . .
Treating Dogs' Spinal Cord Injuries Could Help Humans

Some pet dachshunds, beagles and corgis with spinal cord injuries will undergo an experimental treatment that, if effective, could eventually be used on people with similar injuries. The drug treatment has proven so effective in mice studies that the U.S. Department of Defense has granted $750,000 to support the three-year dog study, launching this spring, with the hope that it can ultimately treat military personnel and others with spinal cord injuries. . . . . . . .

You are looking at wiener dog racing royalty. This is Calvin, a spotted dachshund from Albuquerque who, turns out, is pretty gosh darn fast! Calvin's owner Cindy Spencer says, "He's the current wiener national champion, so the fastest wiener dog in the nation." Spencer says last year, she heard an ad on the radio for a National Dachshund Dash. On a whim, she trucked over to the tryouts. Cindy says, "He ended up sweeping the whole thing. We got the trip to San Diego, we flew out there and he ended up sweeping that too." . . . . . . . .

Four Fire Department of Montgomery Township firefighters have been thanked by the supervisors for their quick thinking to save a township resident. But that resident they saved was a little different than most of those the firefighters deal with — they rescued a pet Dachshund named Candy who was trapped in a hole, according to Candy’s owner Laureen Giampa. . . . . . .
